A Mechanic's Mistake: How a Simple Error Cost Me Thousands
For years, I criss-crossed Europe, traveling over fifteen hundred miles in each direction, in my well-loved Range Rover. I wanted both comfort and economy, so I opted for an LPG conversion, which drastically reduced fuel costs, especially in Eastern Europe, where Russian gas can cost pennies. This investment paid off for a while, but ultimately, a mechanic's error led to a series of costly mishaps.
Transmission Troubles
One day, after taking my vehicle to a trusted independent Land Rover specialist for transmission adjustments, I noticed unusual movements under the car while traveling in Derbyshire. My suspicions were that the torque converter or gearbox had not been properly secured with their mountings and connecting bolts. This suspicion was confirmed by the local specialist at Cowers Lane, who diagnosed a dangling torque converter. However, when I asked him to fix it and write a specific note, he instead provided a generic receipt without any details. His defense was that he didn't want to cause “grief” to a fellow mechanic.
Lost Investment
Upon returning to Coventry, the original workshop dismissed the issue, stating that the mountings had been secured and that the unit shook itself apart. Unfortunately, the unit never worked properly again, and I had no choice but to sell the car to someone who had the funds to replace the entire transmission.
Indifference and Cost
This experience has led me to believe that these incidents might have cost the businesses thousands of pounds in lost work over the years. As I am well-known in off-road and expedition circles, my dissatisfaction and word-of-mouth might have had a significant impact.
Lesson Learned
This experience has taught me several important lessons. Firstly, it is crucial to obtain detailed reports from mechanics on any work done, especially when the vehicle is of high value. Secondly, it is imperative to verify the accuracy of the parts used for repairs. Lastly, it is essential to be proactive in advocating for the quality of service and to demand accountability.
