Australian Life: A Safe and Diverse Society
What is Being Australian Like
Life in Australia is a unique blend of warm weather, diverse communities, and a stable political environment. Today, I share some insights into the qualities that make Australia a special place to live.
Weather and Climate
Recently, the weather has been quite warm, which is typical of the season as we draw closer to summer in about three weeks. Australia's climate varies significantly, with tropical regions in the north and temperate zones in the south. This diverse climate creates a variety of living conditions and experiences for its inhabitants.
Healthcare
A notable event in my recent life is the installation of a Cochlear implant, a medical procedure that involved a day surgery and an overnight stay at one of the top hospitals in the country, Mater Private Hospital. The most remarkable aspect of this process was that it was entirely free of cost, highlighting the excellent healthcare system in Australia.
Community Safety
One of the safest aspects of living in Australia is the significant reduction in gun violence. Unlike other countries where mass shootings can occur, in Australia, schools and public places are safe zones. This means that my children and grandchildren can attend school without the fear of violence, a luxury that many other countries lack.
Natural Disasters
Natural disasters are less frequent and impactful in Australia. While areas prone to tornadoes can cause structural damage and loss of life, cyclones tend to occur in sparsely populated regions. The occasional cyclones do little to the overall quality of life, but in general, Australia enjoys a high level of safety and stability from such events.
Racial Harmony
Living in a multi-racial community, I have never witnessed any racially motivated violence. This reflects the broader Australian society, where diversity is celebrated and racial tensions are minimal. The elimination of such incidents contributes to a harmonious and inclusive environment.
Historical Perspectives
My own educational experience, which took place decades ago, illustrates how attitudes have evolved. One of my classmates was known as "Abo," likely due to derogatory nicknames. However, today, such language would be considered inappropriate and offensive. This change in societal attitudes reflects the progress made in recognizing the importance of respect and inclusivity.
Agricultural Practices
On a recent audit visit to a farm, I encountered a farmer with a legal weapon—loaded rifle—due to his need to protect his livestock from dingoes. This scenario highlights the respect for legal and necessary means of self-protection, which is an important aspect of Australian rural life.
Weather Challenges
My experience with snow is a testament to the wide range of climates in Australia. Tasmania, where I holidayed recently, featured snow-covered roads. For me, snow equates to a challenge, as I do not own sufficient clothing to survive in such weather. This is a stark contrast to the warmth and sunshine that most Australians enjoy.
Political System
Australia's political system is designed to be responsive to the needs and expectations of its citizens. At elections, I am able to cast my vote in favor of a candidate who performs well, or to support an alternative if the incumbent does not meet my standards. This makes the democratic process accessible and meaningful for each citizen.
Conclusion
Overall, Australia resonates as a country with unmatched qualities. From its warm and welcoming climate to its efficient healthcare system and safe communities, Australia offers a living experience that is both unique and undeniably special. I am immensely grateful to call this place my home.
