Becoming a Chartered Accountant (CA) and Chartered Secretarial (CS)
Becoming a Chartered Accountant (CA) and Chartered Secretarial (CS)
Completing your degree is just the beginning of a fulfilling career. If you aspire to become a Chartered Accountant (CA) and Chartered Secretarial (CS), there are multiple pathways to follow. In this guide, we will explore the various routes and requirements to become a highly sought-after professional in the field of commerce.
My Journey
After completing a degree, I had the opportunity to pursue both the CA and CS programs simultaneously. Although I eventually obtained a CA degree and a completion certificate for CS, I was unable to complete the required training for CS due to my plans to start working after obtaining my CA certification.
It took around 5 years of dedicated study and preparation to achieve these qualifications, during which I had to sacrifice many social events, family gatherings, and even some special occasions like festivals and birthdays. While the journey was challenging, the rewards have been significant.
Financial Considerations
The financial investment in these qualifications is considerable. For the CA program, you would typically spend around ?2 lakhs on coaching and study materials alone, on top of the institute’s exam and registration fees. On the other hand, the CS program places less emphasis on formal coaching, and you can proceed with self-study once you have registered.
Key Study Paths:
CA - Chartered Accountant
The Chartered Accountant (CA) program in India involves three levels: Foundation, Intermediate, and Final. Graduates can directly apply for the CA Intermediate level without having to take the Foundation exam, as the curriculum is closely aligned with their graduation coursework. Here’s a breakdown of the eligibility and requirements:
Direct Entry Route: Graduates can apply directly for the CA Intermediate level. However, they must register with the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) and complete an articleship period (a period of practical training) of at least 9 months and a total of 3 years spread over 3 cycles, with each cycle comprising 9-month training and 2-3 years of articleship. ICAITSS Course: Candidates can join the Indian Chartered Institute of Training and Study Scheme (ICITSS) for a 4-week foundation course. This is adapted for students who have already completed their graduation and are looking to expedite their journey.Upon successful completion of the CA Intermediate and Final exams, you will become a fully qualified Chartered Accountant. The entire process, including articleship, can take approximately 3 to 4 years.
CS - Chartered Secretarial
Gaining the Chartered Secretarial (CS) qualification involves significant dedication and study. While similar to the CA program, it does not require formal registration until you are ready to join the practical training phase. Here’s a closer look at the process:
Foundation Level: This is a self-study phase during which you can familiarize yourself with the basics of the profession. Once you have a solid foundation, you can proceed to the practical training phase. Practical Training (Articleship): Upon completing 9 months of practical training under a CA, you can take the CS Intermediate level exam. After passing the Intermediate level, you will need to complete a further 9 months of training before taking the final CS examination.Additional Considerations
While pursuing both CA and CS simultaneously is commendable, it is important to consider your academic commitments and time management. Here are some key points to keep in mind:
Study Plan: Create a structured study plan that balances your academic responsibilities with the rigorous demands of professional certifications. Part-Time or Flexibility: You can start the CS Intermediate level while doing your CA Intermediate articleship, allowing for a more balanced approach. Registering: Depending on your performance in your college exams, you may be eligible to directly register for CA Intermediate. Seek guidance from your college for this possibility. Conclusion
Your journey to becoming a Chartered Accountant and Chartered Secretarial is within reach. By following these structured pathways and maintaining a balanced approach, you can achieve your professional goals while maintaining your academic and personal commitments.
Best of luck on your journey to success!
