Unveiling the Fascinating Aspects of Nursing Beyond Medications

When many people think about being a nurse, they envision a routine filled with giving medications and sitting at a desk. But for me, an ICU and ward nurse, nursing involves much more. Here, we explore the challenges and hidden rewards of the nursing profession that often go unnoticed.

The Declining Nursing Profession

did you know that the nursing profession is facing a decline? In my current hospital, we have only four nurses per shift, and our fourth floor is closed due to nursing staff shortages. If another nurse calls in sick, it can land me with 24-hour responsibilities. This is a stark reality for many nurses who feel the strain of understaffing and the potential for the sole responsibility of patient care.

And then there's the night shift, often solitary yet crucial. I find myself isolated with just one patient. It's a deeply emotional and draining experience, both physically and mentally.

The Emotional Toll: A Nurse's Emotional Journey

The Fear and Exhaustion

One of the most interesting aspects of being a nurse that most people don't know about is the emotional journey we face. In my first year as a nurse, I was afraid of everything. With experience, this fear subsides but reemerges periodically as I strive to keep patients alive and wonder about the outcomes others might achieve. This is all against the backdrop of exhausting long shifts without proper breaks, missed meals, and constant exhaustion.

The Undervalued Role of Nurses

Many people don’t realize the immense importance of nurses in healthcare. While doctors spend time with patients, the credit for good care often goes to the nurse. We ensure medications are given on time, meals are attended to, and patients are provided with the mental and physical comfort they need. We bear the weight of patients' lives in our hands during the most critical moments.

Unseen Rewards of the Nursing Profession

Despite the challenges, there are profound rewards. The smile of a scared and painful elderly woman, the hug of a little child thanking you for being their friend, and the stories of patients who were inspired by the care they received to become nurses themselves are unforgettable. Additionally, job offers from nurses who were moved by the care we provide to their loved ones make it all worthwhile.

For all the medical professionals out there, I want to express big thanks for your dedication to keeping society healthy and sacrificing personal time for work. May you never forget the impact you have on our lives.

Key Takeaways:

Nursing involves much more than just giving medications and sitting at a desk. The nursing profession is facing a significant shortage of staff, leading to longer and more challenging shifts for nurses. Nurses play a crucial role in patient care and often receive the credit for the care provided.
