Creating a Personal Mission Statement: The Why Behind Your Journey

Have you ever stopped to think about the core of what drives you? A personal mission statement is the embodiment of your passion, purpose, and the reasons behind your actions.

Whether you’re coaching a business or overseeing your personal life, a mission statement can provide invaluable guidance. It's not just about stating what you are now; it’s about where you want to be and the principles that will guide you along the way.

The Power of Mission and Vision Statements

Imagine having a clear path forward, a direction that’s both meaningful and achievable. This is what mission and vision statements can offer you. They can make your life more focused and directed, keeping you on track and ensuring that you make the most important decisions.

A mission statement highlights your current goals and objectives, while a vision statement sets your long-term aspirations. Together, they act as powerful tools for prioritizing and realigning your efforts. In this article, we will explore the benefits of creating a personal mission statement and how it can positively impact your life.

Why Create a Personal Mission Statement?

The Importance of Formulation: Creating your mission statement involves more than just deciding what you want your life to be about. It requires introspection, clarity, and a commitment to your values. Writing it down turns it from a vague idea into a tangible, actionable goal. This makes it easier for you to stay true to your principles and to align your actions with your vision.

Preventing Distraction: In today’s world, there are countless “bright shiny objects” that can pull your focus away from your true passions and goals. A mission statement is like a lighthouse, guiding you through the fog of distraction and ensuring that you stay on course.

Staying Motivated: Even in the face of tough tasks like homework, projects, or long-term goals, a mission statement keeps you motivated. It reminds you why you started and helps you push through challenges. Just like taking one step at a time on a long journey, staying focused on your mission can help you move forward steadily and successfully.

A Personal Mission Statement Example

For me, my personal mission statement is:

To boldly pursue my passions and purpose and to teach, encourage, and inspire others to do the same, resulting in lives overflowing with joy, peace, and fulfillment.

This statement reflects my core values and the impact I want to have on the world. It is closely related to the mission statement of my coaching business:

To serve, educate, and encourage you by assisting you with the discovery and pursuit of your passions in a way that honors your purpose and your own vision for success while amplifying who you are personally and advancing you professionally.

Both statements align with my core values and the impact I aspire to make. By consistently referring back to these statements, I am reminded of what is truly important and how I can align my actions with my goals.

Deciphering the Terminology: Mission vs Vision

Vision Statement: Your “Why” – This statement is all about where you want to be in the future, your long-term aspirations and dreams. A vision statement provides a clear picture of what success looks like for you. It acts as a roadmap outlining the destination you are aiming for. For instance, my vision statement is:

I believe you can find the courage to discover and pursue your passions despite the obstacles you may face. I want to see you actively pursuing your passions with confidence along with responsibility to your purpose in life.

Mission Statement: Your “How” – This statement is about the steps you will take to achieve your vision. It outlines the methods, principles, and actions you will use to bring your vision to life. It is a clear and concise statement of your intentions and the role you play in achieving your goals.

The Role of Personal Branding

One of the foundational tools that I provide to clients, whether in one-on-one coaching or my on-demand programs, is a personal branding program. This program helps clients develop their own vision statement, mission statement, unique selling proposition (USP), and core values. By understanding and clearly articulating these components, individuals can better define their personal brand and the message they want to convey to the world.

Personal branding is not just about creating a flashy image; it’s about consistently embodying the elements that define who you are and what you stand for. Whether you are a coach, a business owner, or simply someone looking to live a fulfilling life, a strong personal brand can help you stand out and make a meaningful impact.

Conclusion

Crafting a personal mission statement is about more than just writing down a few words. It is about aligning your actions with your values, staying focused on your goals, and ensuring that you are making the most of your time and resources. By taking the time to create and hone your mission and vision statements, you can create a roadmap that will guide you towards a life of joy, peace, and fulfillment.
