The term diversity and inclusion has become a buzzword in the discourse surrounding equality and equity. Many mistakenly believe that this concept only pertains to certain racial groups, ignoring the broader scope of inclusivity. However, true diversity and inclusion encompass a wide range of factors beyond race, including sexual orientation, gender identity, and socio-economic status.

Realizing the Full Spectrum of Diversity

Many people often focus narrowly on race when discussing diversity, believing that only Black, Brown, and LGBTQIAMAP individuals need to be included. This narrow perspective overlooks other marginalized groups, such as East-Asians, who are often considered White adjacent for privilege purposes. This misconception has led to a skewed understanding of what diversity truly means.

The Complexities of Race in Diversity Discourse

The misunderstanding of diversity often stems from the assumption that non-White individuals, particularly Blacks and Browns, are not capable or intelligent enough to compete with Whites and Asians. Consequently, they are given special help under the guise of inclusion. This approach is not only patronizing but also perpetuates a cycle of racism. The left, including many Democrats, have advocated for these initiatives for over 150 years, yet the underlying message often remains unchallenged.

Dynamic Nature of Diversity

It is noteworthy that when one group becomes too successful, it can be redefined as an oppressor category. This dynamic nature is evident in the way East-Asians have succeeded and been considered a less diverse group, no longer needing affirmative action in some US colleges. Conversely, those who do not fit into the predefined diverse category are often marginalized. For instance, in the context of street attacks in New York, individuals who are not considered diverse might face hostility, effectively being pushed into an oppressor category.

True Meaning of Diversity and Inclusion

The term diversity and inclusion is often misused to mean more Black people. Although technically there is no issue with diversity in the technical sense, the practical application of these terms has shifted. Corporations and activists use these terms to advocate for greater representation of Black individuals, which has become nearly synonymous with diversity. The real issue arises when these terms become pejorative, as they no longer represent their original meaning.

The Inequitable Nature of Diverse Quotas

The misuse of diversity and inclusion often leads to racism against all races. For instance, simply placing an Asian or Hispanic individual in a predominantly White cast is not seen as meeting Hollywood's definition of diversity unless it involves a Black person. Companies that are concerned about not meeting their diversity quotas typically hire individuals of color to meet these requirements, which is deeply problematic. This approach trivializes the diversity of other races and creates an oppressive environment for individuals who excel.

It is crucial to recognize that diversity should be inclusive of all aspects of human identity, not just race. True inclusion means celebrating and valuing every individual, regardless of their background or personal characteristics. As society continues to evolve, the true meaning of diversity and inclusion must be redefined to ensure that all voices are heard and valued.
