Flight-based Pay vs. Ground-based Pay

Flight attendants are paid based on the actual flight time, starting from the moment the doors are sealed until the plane lands. The reason for this preference is the seniority system in place within the airline industry.

Seniority is a critical factor in the allocation of desirable work assignments. In the United States, it takes years of experience and seniority to be able to secure international flights. These flights come with higher pay rates and a greater chance of crew rest time, making them highly coveted by many flight attendants.

The Irregularity of Flight Attendant Pay

The pay structure for flight attendants may seem counterintuitive to some at first glance. Why would someone be paid during a sleeping period, when they could be sleeping at home for free? However, this pay structure is designed to ensure that flight attendants are adequately compensated for their time on the job, even during rest periods.
