Do People Regret Studying Computer Science?

Introduction

Undoubtedly, there are individuals who express regret over their decision to pursue computer science. However, my own experience speaks differently; I have been a programmer for 58 years and possess a PhD from Carnegie Mellon University. My journey has been fulfilling, but how common is regret among those who choose to study computer science?

The Case for and Against Regret

Not every academic path is suitable for everyone. There are numerous subjects where I struggled and eventually gave up on, yet I do not consider these attempts as wasted endeavors. They were simply not the right fit for me.

One memory that sticks out is my involvement in 'wood shop'. I never had any inclination towards woodworking and lacked the necessary skills. When school counselors needed to fill empty slots in my schedule, the only option available was wood shop, which I was obligated to attend for three years. To add to the disappointment, my parents had given me a woodshop bench and tools as a birthday present in Kansas, a gift that consistently ranked among the worst in my life.

Choice and Regret

The closest I can say to regret is studying something that one did not initially choose. With my daughter, I endeavored to encourage her to explore a few different fields, such as playing the flute, roller skating, and programming. Interestingly, only the attempt to program did not resonate with her. When it came time for college, she chose between music and sports, but she had the option to do both.

These instances illustrate the importance of making choices based on genuine interest. If you attempt to learn to program and pursue computer science, the journey is not a bad one. However, ensuring that it is your choice, rather than a forced one, is crucial. You will not regret trying, even if it doesn’t align with your desires.
