Introduction and Background

My journey into the MSc Biotechnology program at Christ University began with extensive research and preparation. After several years of academic pursuit, seeking to advance my knowledge in biotechnology, I set out to secure a spot in this prestigious program.

The Entrance Exam

My preparation for the entrance exam was thorough, leveraging both the Christ University Undergraduate (UG) syllabus and additional study materials. The exam itself was concise, focusing primarily on molecular biology questions from its multiple-choice format. Despite the examination's modest difficulty level, the score heavily depended on the student's familiarity with the topics covered. Analyzing my performance, I believe I scored approximately 26 out of 30 marks, a result that was crucial for my admission.

Skills Assessment

After the entrance exam, the skills assessment followed, which involved writing pages on two easy topics: 'How biotechnology students can stay updated about advancements in the field' and 'How holistic education aids higher education.' A third participant was asked to discuss advancements in biotechnology. A ten-minute preparation period was provided. Though brief, the time was sufficient to compose detailed and coherent responses, highlighting my ability to communicate effectively and structure my thoughts coherently.

The Interview

The interview, though challenging, was a significant part of the overall admission process. The interviewers were remarkably calm and supportive, which significantly alleviated my pre-interview stress. They began with a self-introduction followed by straightforward questions about my choice of Christ University, career goals, and my interest in biotechnology. The technical questions, however, posed a unique challenge. Coming from a zoology and botany background, I had spent considerable time studying biotechnology, neglecting my knowledge of botany and zoology. As a result, only six out of the eight questions were successfully answered. These included:

What are plasmids? What are interferons? What are the different types of antibodies? What is double fertilization? What is phyllotaxy? What is DNA helicase function? What is tRNA and rRNA? Why is laminar flow used in tissue culture?

Despite the initial hesitation, I managed to recall and answer the question on phyllotaxy. Remaining calm and engaging throughout the interview, I presented my knowledge with a relaxed demeanor, which impressed the interviewers.

Micro Presentation

For the micro presentation, I chose the topic of animal testing. Although it was not delivered perfectly, I was still able to convey my thoughts effectively, which was a testament to my ability to speak about technical subjects with confidence.

Conclusion and Final Thoughts

Reflecting on the entire experience, it is evident that preparation and readiness for the interview are paramount. Key takeaways include adhering to specific dress codes, conducting thorough research on the course and university, and being genuine and humble in addressing any shortcomings. Mistakes, while disheartening, are opportunities to learn and improve. Should you face similar challenges, remember to approach them with a positive mindset and a willingness to adapt and grow.
