From Homeless to Millionaire: Overcoming Adversity Through Sticks and Hard Work
My journey from a 15-year-old boy who was kicked out of his home to becoming a millionaire is a testament to the power of determination and hard work. My story is one of resilience, perseverance, and the importance of education and personal growth.
The Beginning of a New Chapter
When I turned 15, my parents separated, and I was moved from my mother's house to my father's. Life was typical for a 15-year-old until one weekend. I was invited to a friend's party where, unfortunately, I was at the wrong place at the wrong time. My friend got arrested, and I was left homeless, returning to my father's home.
My father opened the bedroom door to see me, and what I saw next was more shocking than the arrest. He was using a machete to attack the stepmother. This incident left a deep scar and resulted in me being kicked out within a week. Fast forward to July 1986, I was homeless and only 15 years old, even though my birthday was in June that year.
Challenges and Determination
Despite the hardships, I managed to find a job in the automotive industry, learning to paint cars during my free time. I worked part-time at a Point of Time (PT) job after high school, where I earned an hourly wage of $3.86 working 25 hours a week. I supplemented my income by painting cars for $100 plus in paint and supplies.
My parents' expectations were far from my reality. They never believed in my success story. However, I set a goal for myself. I promised that I would show them, I would make it, and retire at 50. Despite their skepticism, I kept pushing forward.
A Milestone Journey to Success
Fast-forward to January 2017, I retired at 45 years old, having become a millionaire. My path to success was paved with sticks and hard work. My strategy included focusing on education, making wise financial decisions, and never giving up on my goals.
I joined the United States Navy in 1997, pursued a career in PA school, and served for 5.5 years. I was injured during my service, breaking my back. However, with the help of the VA, I retired with a 100% disability and with the Navy. I continued to work part-time as an orthopedic surgeon in Las Vegas. Unfortunately, another tragedy struck; I was hit by a car that ran a red light, and I required a 5-level lumbar fusion surgery. My appetite for work, however, remained intact.
Investments and Success
Over the years, I made wise financial decisions, such as buying stocks at the initial public offering (IPO) price of Amazon and a few others. My approach to life has been to let my hard work and dedication shape my identity, rather than allowing external challenges to define me.
I have stayed away from my parents since the incident for over 30 years, but they are both 84 and 85 years old and need to work to survive. They thought I would fail, but the joke was on them. Today, I am worth almost $2,000,000, and my house will be paid off in less than 5 years.
Lessons from My Journey
My story is a reminder that no matter the challenges you face, you can overcome them through hard work, determination, and perseverance. Don't let others dictate who you are; make your own destiny. Focus on education, make wise financial decisions, and fight for your dreams.
Everyone's journey is unique, and the stories we share serve as a reminder that failure is not the end but a stepping stone to success. If you're feeling stuck or struggling, take a moment to reflect on your goals and stay committed to them. You can overcome any adversity with the right mindset and effort.
Conclusion
Sticks and hard work have always been my way out of the life I was thrust into. My story is a testament to the power of perseverance and the importance of setting and pursuing your goals. Remember, no matter where you come from, you have the potential to achieve great things. Don't give up, work harder, and focus on your education and making smart decisions. The journey to success is worth every struggle.
