Rules for a Smooth Viewing Experience

While these rules are helpful, remember that the rules are whatever you and your friends choose to make them. It is a TV show, after all, and if people want to shout out the answers, there is no harm in it.

Priority Rules

Here are some rules in order of priority:

Wait before the entire clue has been read by host Alex Trebek before responding aloud. Jumping the gun is not in the spirit of the program, which requires contestants to wait for the same before ringing in. It can be considered inconsiderate to slower readers trying to enjoy the show. You are not impressing anyone and you are not winning anything except maybe a biggest jackass award.

Exception: On some Clue Crew or video clue clues, the clue reader will break during the clue as though it were over. If there is no text on screen and you honestly believe the clue is finished, you may answer. Occasionally, you will be wrong, but a good faith effort is all that is required. No ESP is necessary.

Do not talk over Alex when contestants have blundered and give the right answer. Then, you'll never learn anything.

In Final Jeopardy, wait for the time to think to be nearly over before revealing your responses. If desired, write down your response as on the program. Again, there is no prize for speed. Everyone deserves a chance to think about their response.

It is always appropriate to root for returning champions and contestants from your hometown. It is also okay to root against players who jump around the board hunting for Daily Doubles and those contestants with odd habits and annoying voices. Contestants should be judged on their interview stories, if you choose to watch that segment. The host of the viewing has the option to watch this segment or not.
