Understanding the Mindsets of Leaders: Politicians vs. Statesmen

Leadership is often perceived as a role reserved for individuals who can navigate the complex world of politics with strategic precision. However, the reality is that politicians and statesmen, though distinct in their approaches, both exhibit unique mindsets shaped by the environments they operate in.

The Mind of the Politician

Take any ordinary human and place them in a position where their every move is under constant scrutiny and the slightest misstep could result in their dismissal. This scenario often paints a political career. Politicians are not inherently different from the average person; they merely have learned to adapt to the dysfunctional systems they encounter. However, not all survive; some are no longer in politics.

To fix the problems within politics, one must address the root issues, such as the electoral systems. Plurality voting is a significant flaw, as it can exploit and magnify the extremes. I propose that a system of approval voting—which allows voters to choose multiple candidates they ‘approve’ of—could be a more effective alternative. This simple yet impactful change could drastically improve the qualities of elected officials and the overall political environment.

The Incentive Structure of Politics

The incentive structure that politicians operate within primarily revolves around securing and retaining their positions. Their thinking is heavily influenced by the need for re-election. After securing their seats, the range of ideas they entertain can become much more eclectic and diverse.

Politicians are often seen as predators, focused on survival and manipulation. The environment of politics requires them to navigate with caution and cunning. Statesmen, on the other hand, are leaders who prioritize the larger good over personal survival.

The Reality of Statesman

A statesman, in contrast, operates with a different set of values and principles. They focus on making decisions that benefit the broader community, rather than individual survival or personal gain. One historical example is Donald Trump. Despite his divisive reputation, he separated himself from the mold of traditional politicians by tweeting his thoughts openly and honestly. This transparency is something that few Washington politicians embrace.

Trump’s honesty, while hated by many, reflects a willingness to be courageous in a world where political leaders often hide behind spin and propaganda. His actions contrast sharply with the carefully crafted statements and positions of most other politicians, highlighting a stark difference in leadership styles. In essence, Trump embodies a form of leadership that is both direct and undeniably impactful.
