Throughout my career, I have had numerous memorable incidents with my bosses, each one teaching me valuable lessons and shaping my professional journey. In this article, I will recount some of the most significant moments that stand out, including the inspiring story of my own boss, Howard Silverman.

Overcoming Challenges Together

One of the most memorable moments occurred during a high-pressure period when our division was working 24/7 to meet a critical deadline. Our hard work paid off as we won the company's most productive division award. Seeing my boss’ pride in us and the recognition from the company is a reminder that dedication and teamwork truly pay off. These experiences have made me appreciate the importance of perseverance and collaboration in achieving goals.

The Loss of a Mentor

Another moment that will always stick with me is the discovery that my best-ever boss, who was only 39 at the time, was diagnosed with cancer. The subsequent 11-month treatment period and the tragic loss of this mentor were deeply saddening. This personal experience taught me the value of focusing on the here and now and cherishing the time we have with those we care about. Although he was no longer with us, the impact of his guidance and support continues to inspire me to this day.

A Pioneer in My Career

There is no doubt that Howard Silverman was the best manager I ever had. He hired me shortly after completing my BSEE and BSMath, and immediately promoted me to a low-level managerial position, overseeing three engineers and two technicians. When an “up and coming” marketing guy complained that a competitor was outperforming us, I questioned the logic behind the claim that a four-bit solution couldn’t be implemented.

My insistence on finding a practical solution led to a month of research and experimentation, which ultimately resulted in a “Key Personnel Award.” Despite the unfairness of the recognition, Howard’s unwavering support and belief in my abilities taught me the value of standing firm in the face of naysayers and trusting in one's own skills and knowledge.

Characteristics of a Great Boss

Based on my experiences, I have identified several qualities that make a great boss. These qualities not only enhance team performance but also create a positive and motivating work environment. Here are some of the key attributes:

Sensitive, Understanding, and Caring: A boss who listens and empathizes with their team members fosters a supportive and inclusive atmosphere. Supportive: A boss who stands by their team, no matter the challenges, builds trust and loyalty. Goal-oriented but Collaborative: Leaders who focus on achieving organizational goals but do not work in isolation, empowering the team. Resourceful: A boss who relies on creativity and skills to solve problems is an invaluable asset. A Great Listener: A boss who listens to ideas andfeedback is open to suggestion and improvement. Time-conscious: A boss who respects and prioritizes time is fair and efficient. Focus on Collaboration and Decision Making: A boss who emphasizes teamwork and effective decision-making processes ensures a smooth and productive work environment.
