Navigating the Job Search: Lessons from a Cryptocurrency Investor
I recently took a long and arduous journey in my job search, experimenting with various strategies and learning important lessons along the way. From upselling myself in cryptocurrency to searching for jobs that align with my passion for accounting, my experiences have been both challenging and rewarding.
Upskilling in Cryptocurrency
One of the most interesting transformations in my journey was focusing on cryptocurrency, a field that I've come to deeply understand. Beyond just investing, I've learned the history of money, the intricacies of trading currencies, and the nuances of cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin. This journey has not only provided me with a new stream of income by keeping up with the volatile market but has also freed me from traditional banking systems that do not offer interest on deposits. Since then, I've been able to work as my own boss, with the flexibility to work from home and manage my own overheads. My setup includes a laptop, mobile internet connection, and a cold wallet for secure storage.
While this shift has been exciting, it's also been a bumpy ride. I've had to continuously upskill and learn about new developments in the field. For example, each new algorithm or technology update can disrupt how we understand cryptocurrency. As someone who took the time to learn, I've had to adapt and relearn several times. However, the excitement lies in embracing these changes and appreciating the learning process.
Challenging Customer Service Jobs
Part of my job search journey involved delving into customer service roles, particularly in the tax software industry. I began by consulting a vocational counselor, who pushed me towards a position as a customer service representative. Unfortunately, this role turned out to be far from ideal. I was subjected to abuse and insults, many of which were gender-based, from my male colleagues. The work environment was toxic, with disagreements over tax knowledge and a supervisor who made my life miserable. I found that when I stood up to such behavior, the situation escalated. After numerous instances of verbal and emotional abuse, I decided to quit my job and look for a better opportunity.
Following that, I was more discerning in my job search and found a more bearable customer service position working from home. This role still came with its challenges, but it was stylistically different. However, my renewed focus on finding a job that aligns with my passion for accounting has led me to conduct another search on Indeed. So far, I've participated in two interviews, and while it hasn't been easy, it's a clear indication that my commitment to persistence and networking is paying dividends.
Strategies for a Successful Job Search
Here are some of the strategies that have worked for me:
Persistence: Treat your job search like a full-time job. Engage with online resources, network, and stay persistent in your efforts. Networking: Build and maintain your professional network. Use the resources you have, including vocational counselors, social media platforms, and your personal connections. Investment in Yourself: Continuously upskill and invest in areas that align with your career goals. This includes learning about cryptocurrency, accounting, and other relevant fields. Cover Letters and Resumes: Craft personalized cover letters and refine your resume to highlight your skills and experiences. Tailor your application materials for each job you apply to. Passion and Authenticity: Make sure you genuinely care about the company and the position. Companies can sense inauthenticity, so show your genuine passion and interest in the role and the company.Analogies and Lessons
Job searching can be likened to dating. Just like in dating, you may need to go through numerous rejections and challenges to find the right fit. Some jobs may not work out, and that’s okay. It’s important to own your value and not let rejection deter you.
As a cryptocurrency investor, the job search has also taught me to stay adaptable and stay true to yourself. It’s a process that requires patience, persistence, and a willingness to learn and grow.
Ultimately, my experiences have shown that while the journey can be challenging, the rewards are significant. By staying persistent, leveraging the right resources, and maintaining a genuine approach to job searching, you can find a job that is right for you.
