Navigating the UPSC CSE Journey Parallel to a Banking Career

Is it possible to successfully pursue the UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE) while working as an SBI PO or in any other banking institution? This question has puzzled many aspiring civil servants, myself included. In this article, I share my personal experience and insights, offering guidance to those who are seriously considering this path.

Challenges and Success Stories

The journey of cracking the UPSC CSE is challenging, especially when combined with a full-time banking career. Many individuals, including myself, have attempted to balance both paths with varying degrees of success. Here are some key points to consider:

Cracking Prelims vs. Mains

Cracking Prelims: The preliminary examination is relatively easier to crack than the main examination. However, the battle is far from over, as the main examination is more rigorous. Mains Preparation: To prepare for the mains, a break of 1–2 months is essential, where you must focus on intensive revision and answer writing practice.

Personal Experience: Canara Bank to SBI

I achieved success in the UPSC CSE prelims and mains in 2014, while working as a PO in Canara Bank. However, I fell short in the final selection for several reasons:

Banking Commitments: My commitment to Canara Bank did not allow me to dedicate the necessary time to full preparation post-work. Answer Writing Practice: I neglected the crucial step of practicing answer writing, despite needing it for the mains exam. Overconfidence: My second attempt at the mains with only minor differences in performance led to a relaxed approach, which ultimately proved detrimental. Institute Assistance: In hindsight, I would recommend joining an institute specifically for mains answer writing practice. It can provide valuable support and guidance.

After Joining SBI

Following my successful application to SBI in 2015, I decided not to pursue the IAS examination further. Though this decision brings a tinge of sadness, I find solace in contributing to the banking sector:

Compensation: While it is not as comparable, being a successful banker is still a satisfying endeavor. Future Goals: As I progress in my banking career, I hope to forget this sense of loss.

Reflections and Insights from My Batch

From my personal batch, several individuals successfully made it into the civil services. For example, two of my colleagues from the same circle joined the UPSC CSE. Similarly, a similar number of people from junior and senior batches also succeeded in the exam.

Success Rate and Challenges

It is worth noting that even with a large number of aspirants—approximately a million people—chances of success are extremely low. Many who made it through the written exam but failed the interview ultimately pursued other paths, such as joining private sector jobs or family-owned businesses.

Current Bank Recruitment Policies

Modern banks have become more selective when it comes to hiring individuals who are currently or have recently applied to join the civil services. This makes it challenging for such candidates to secure positions in major banks, as their availability may be questioned.

Final Thoughts and Encouragement

While the road to success in the UPSC CSE is fraught with challenges, it is not impossible. If you are exceptionally qualified, you have a good chance of clearing the exam even when maintaining a full-time banking career. My own colleagues who joined from my batch provide testament to this.

Prepare adequately, dedicating necessary time to intensive revision and answer writing practice, and do not underestimate the importance of seeking professional guidance for your mains preparation. Above all, stay resilient and keep striving towards your goals.

Wishing you all the best on your journey. May you achieve your dreams!
