Recalling the IIM Kozhikode Admission Interview Experience for Batch 2020-22
Recalling the IIM Kozhikode Admission Interview Experience for Batch 2020-22
Introduction to the IIFT Exam
My journey to securing admission into the Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode (IIM Kozhikode) for the batch of 2020-22 began with the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT) exam. This experience was a significant one, given the change in pattern for admissions, which was a surprise yet a positive one. Historically, the IIFT exam had sectional cut-offs, and this time the total marks were scaled to 300. With careful preparation, I managed to score 156.5/300, clearing all sectional cut-offs, with my General Knowledge score being a border case. Excitement turned into nervousness at the edge of my seat, always a precursor for a well-prepared General Knowledge section.
Exam Date and Location
The IIFT exam was conducted on 20th February 2020, and my call for the interview came soon after my impressive score. The interview process was scheduled for the first half of the day, and I was eager to be early, arriving at the IIFT Delhi campus at 7:45 AM for the 9 AM WAT-GD-PI process.
Written Ability Test (WAT) and Group Discussion (GD)
The day began with an engaging Written Ability Test (WAT). We were seated in a conference room with comfortable chairs and a round table. WAT sheets were distributed, and we were asked to write our details and attend the WAT process. ID cards were checked before the WAT began. After 15 minutes of preparation, we were given a topic: Is disruptive innovation always helpful. With ample time to brainstorm and write, the sheets were collected, and we moved on to the Group Discussion (GD).
Group Discussion (GD) Topic and Content
The GD topic for the day was: Which is more important—being famous or being important. I spoke about the imperativeness of every day workers, especially those in the military and police, as well as the influence of social media influencers. This balanced argument helped me contribute effectively to the discussion.
Second Round: Interview Process
I was second to last on my interview panel, which allowed me ample time to calm my nerves. The panel comprised three female faculty members (F1, F2, F3).
F1's Questions
Tell me about yourself. What do your parents do? Explain the difference between a manager and a leader. What do you understand by trade blocs? Which trade blocs is India a part of? Why did India leave the RCEP?F2’s Questions
What do you understand by audit (related to your father's occupation)? What is six sigma? What are regression lines? Draw a few graphs to demonstrate your understanding. Talk about your interest in mathematics.F3's Questions
What would you contribute to the society if you join IIM Kozhikode? Talk about your interest in teaching children.Verdict and Conclusion
The interview was a mix of academic questions and personal reflections. While some queries were straightforward, those related to my personal experiences required thoughtful responses. The panel's keen interest in my journey, aspirations, and academic capabilities affirmed my readiness and made me feel valued and transparent. It is worth noting that my intention to contribute to society and my background in teaching children were the key highlights of the interview.
Verdict: My interview was a success, and I was converted to join IIM Kozhikode for the batch of 2020-22. This experience broadened my horizon and reinforced my commitment to pursuing my goals with dedication and passion.
