Reflections of a High School Janitor: Building Memories and Inspiring Growth

For over two decades, I have served as a janitor at a high school, where I have had the privilege of witnessing the growth and transformation of countless students. The journey of a high school student is marked by numerous challenges and triumphs, and as a janitor, I have been part of their occasional daily routine and their significant milestones.

Every year, there is a fresh wave of students who arrive at our high school feeling lost and unsure about their new surroundings. It usually takes them about two weeks to acclimate and find their rhythm. Watching these students transition from new arrivals to confident graduates is one of the most rewarding aspects of my job. The transformation is most evident in those who leave to serve in the military or pursue other life-changing paths. One particular instance stands out in my mind: a skinny kid who graduated and went into the military, came back fully ripped, and I barely recognized him. This kind of transformation showcases the incredible potential within each student and the lasting impact they can have on their lives.

Building Lasting Connections

I have the unique opportunity to leave a lasting impression on many of my students. When they graduate, they often come to me to sign their yearbooks. Some seniors even tell me that they will never forget me. These moments truly highlight the importance of building connections and being a positive influence in a student's life. Dealing with Challenging Behaviors

While the students I interact with are generally kind and generous, there are occasions where I encounter knuckleheads. However, it's important to note that the late middle school years can be particularly challenging. Students in grades 6 to 9 are often more difficult to deal with and can be disrespectful. In contrast, high school students tend to be better behaved and more responsible. This difference in behavior reflects their development and maturity, which makes working at a high school a more enjoyable and fulfilling experience.

Advising Against Middle School Positions

Based on my experience, I would not recommend working in a middle school. The environment can be more challenging, with students displaying less maturity and respect. However, the high school experience offers a more stable and rewarding professional environment.
