Shaping a Fulfilling Life: The Role of happiness and Beyond

Should happiness be the goal of living, or is there more to life than simply seeking joy? This question has sparked countless discussions and philosophical debates. Different individuals find different meanings and fulfillment in life, leading to varied perspectives on life's purpose and ultimate goal.

Survival vs. Spiritual Awakening

Life requires addressing its vital aspects, such as survival, but it also demands a deeper meaning. As a 70-year-old atheist, I believe that a spiritual element can provide us with a greater purpose in life, even if it isn't tied to traditional religion. A shared belief, awareness, or universal cause can unite us as individuals and as a global community.

While some may strive alone or in small groups, I believe we should strive together in significantly larger numbers, not just for ourselves or our countries, but for all humanity. Finding a common ground in the best of all religions and philosophies can provide emotional support and a sense of pride in our shared values.

Individual Perspective on Goals

The answer to the question of what should be the goal of life is not one-size-fits-all. Some individuals find happiness to be their primary goal, while others derive satisfaction from other pursuits. For some, dominating others provides a greater sense of fulfillment than simple happiness. Others may be so focused on revenge that they cannot find contentment through happiness alone.

Knowledge can also be a significant goal, with happiness serving as an additional byproduct. For myself, happiness is a major goal, but I take issue with the sentiment "Don't worry, be happy." Some individuals believe that the primary goal of life is to discover their own personal major goal.

From a broader perspective, any notion of 'salvation' as a primary goal is false, although it may deceive some individuals. The true pursuit of happiness should involve honest and ethical means, ensuring that the joy we feel is lasting and enduring.

Etiquette of True Happiness

True happiness is best achieved through good deeds and ethical behavior. Fraudulent activities and immoral means will ultimately lead to short-lived satisfaction. Instead, finding happiness through positive actions, such as doing good karmas (actions), can contribute to a more lasting sense of fulfillment.

It is important to recognize that self-satisfaction and personal fulfillment are vital components of a meaningful life. Engaging in activities that benefit others and contribute to a greater good can enhance our own well-being and happiness.

Conclusion

While happiness is a significant part of life, it should not be the only goal. Finding a greater purpose, whether it is contributing to a shared cause, learning, or making the world a better place, can provide a more fulfilling and rewarding life experience.
