The Best Decisions in Life: A Journey of Purpose and Fulfillment

Life is a series of decisions that shape our futures. Some decisions are clear, while others are made with uncertainty. Reflecting on my life, I realized that there is a particular time in one's life where deciding on a career path can profoundly impact the rest of it.

Early Experiences and Inspirations

I grew up in a household near a military airbase, which instilled in me an early fascination with aircraft. From a young age, I knew I wanted to work with aircraft. After attending school for aircraft mechanics and obtaining my license, I further pursued a pilot's license. My 16-year career in the Air Force solidified my path as an aircraft mechanic, but even now, I still find immense joy in this profession.

Challenges and Divine Guidance

Life has its share of challenges. When I embarked on a work-study trip to England from Ireland, I was apprehensive. God provided me with clear guidance, instructing me to accept my responsibility for National Service in the British Army. He assured me that upon its completion, He would guide me to Bible College, and ultimately, into missionary work.

Despite no openings being available for college immediately after my service, God directed me towards an international mission in Thailand. I dedicated 27 years of my life to this mission before spending another 25 years in Cambodia. Looking back, I am grateful for the clear vision of God’s plan from the age of 20 to the present, and now at 82, I feel blessed with the life I have had with Him.

Flexibility and Reflection on Decisions

Life is a series of changes and reevaluations. As a child, I also had aspirations. I initially thought of being a fireman, but later, my interest shifted to nuclear physics due to my strong background in sciences. After a 20-year career in blood banking and medical research, I felt a strong desire to improve the quality of life rather than just prolong it. This led me to pursue a graduate degree in philosophy and psychology. Although the pay was significantly lower, I eventually started my own delivery business.

Reflecting on these experiences, I can recommend a few key steps for those considering major career changes:

Clearly think about where and how you will make a transition. Avoid making decisions based on the desires of your parents or others. If you are living with your parents, make the transition as soon as possible to ensure that your decisions are driven by your own aspirations.

Ultimately, the best time to decide on a career path is when you can reflect on your strengths, passions, and goals. Whether you are embarking on a new journey or reevaluating an existing one, it is important to approach these decisions with clarity and purpose.
