As an employer, have you ever found yourself dismissing a candidate solely because they called to inquire about the status of their application? This practice raises several important questions about the hiring process and the expectations that both employers and job seekers have regarding the application and interview procedures.

Employer's Perspective: The Challenges

The hiring process for most companies is arduous and structured to ensure a fair and efficient selection of candidates. Many job agencies advise job seekers to stay in contact with employers to demonstrate interest. However, for employers, this advice can sometimes lead to a few common issues.

Mass Applications and Non-negotiable Requirements

Every day, I receive more than 100 resumes for various job postings. Each posting clearly lists both the non-negotiable requirements for the job and a statement that 'no calls' are allowed. This 'no call' policy is not just about saving time but also ensuring that only suitable candidates move forward in the hiring process.

Initial Screening

Out of the 100 resumes received, only about 5 candidates typically meet the basic non-negotiable requirements. These requirements often include specific years of experience, computer literacy, or other essential skills. If a candidate does not meet these criteria, they are immediately rejected.

Qualifications Evaluation

The remaining 5 candidates are then evaluated based on their qualifications for further consideration. Here, the behavior of a candidate becomes exceptionally crucial. For instance, if a candidate contacts me to check the status and does so repeatedly to the point of being pushy, this can significantly impact their chances of getting an interview.

The Impact of Repeated Inquiry

It's not uncommon for candidates to contact the employer to inquire about the status of their application. However, the frequency and manner of these inquiries can play a decisive role in whether a candidate continues to be considered. In the case of a candidate who contacts me multiple times every day, I have to drop them from the list. Such behavior indicates a lack of respect and proper understanding of the application process.

Why Repeated Calls are a Red Flag

The candidate who repeatedly checks the status shows that they can't follow directions and lack basic social skills. This is not just a matter of professional courtesy; it's a red flag for the employer. Persistent inquiries, especially after having been explicitly told not to call, can make a candidate appear impatient and disrespectful.

A Balanced Approach

For candidates who contact once after a week, this shows routine follow-up and can be acceptable, especially if they mention simple questions. For example, if a candidate simply says, "I just wanted to make sure my application went through," this is a reasonable and non-disruptive concern.

The expectations placed on both job seekers and employers in the hiring process are complex. While job agencies may encourage constant contact to show interest, employers must balance this against the practical realities of the hiring process. Effective communication and mutual respect are crucial for a successful application process. It's important to remember that your actions as a job seeker can significantly impact whether you will move forward in the hiring process.
