Travel for Pleasure: My Journey from Business to Adventure
Travel for Pleasure: My Journey from Business to Adventure
Throughout my career, I've had the privilege of visiting numerous destinations both for business and pleasure. While business travel initially held a certain charm, it transformed into a mere necessity as the years went by. However, certain trips stand out as true pleasures, blending professional responsibilities with personal enjoyment.
Recounting Business Trips
Travels to destinations like Dublin and various U.S. cities such as New York, Chicago, Seattle, and San Francisco were initially enjoyable. However, as I advanced in my career, even more routine business travel to cities like Detroit, Philadelphia, and Fort Worth TX became less appealing. These locations were often associated with 'work,' a term that encompassed long hours and professional responsibilities.
Exploring Navy Bases and Beyond
My job has sent me to numerous navy bases, which are conveniently situated near the coast. This has allowed me to enjoy scenic coastal locations such as Hawaii, San Diego, Pensacola, Jacksonville, and even Camp Lejeune in North Carolina. Camp Lejeune, although not the most glamorous, has also provided me with memorable experiences. Additionally, business trips to Japan and Sicily have turned into fantastic adventures.
Personal Journeys and Treasures
Two trips come to mind that stand out due to their significance and the memories they created.
A Trip to the Scottish Islands
Shortly after my eldest son's untimely passing in a motorcycle accident, I took my younger son on a trip to the Scottish Island of Islay. The main objective was to drive down every road on Islay, but the primary goal was to console and spend time with my son. We stayed at the Old Brablock Hotel in Paisley and spent a few nights at the Bowmore Hotel. This journey left both of us with unforgettable memories. My son, despite being too young to enjoy the local whisky, fell in love with the island, much like I did. We treasure the memories of beautiful deserted beaches and the white sands.
A Journey through France
A few years before the trip to Islay, I embarked on a three-day journey from South Yorkshire, crossing the English Channel and ending in Toulouse. Our route took us through Paris, where we enjoyed a delicious moules marinière lunch on the seafront in Bordeaux, and then to Toulouse for dinner. After successful business negotiations, we visited the Cap d'Agde Plage for a day and then drove through the Auvergne region. At an Auberge in Aumont Aubrac, we celebrated with the proprietors and his son, indulging in an evening of merriment. By the time we took the overnight ferry back, we were > who had shared a wonderful adventure. This trip, like the one to Islay, has remained etched in my memory and that of my former colleague and his cousin.
The Road to Eternal Memories
Throughout my car trips, I've witnessed countless breathtaking views. The car windows have become travelogues, capturing the ever-changing landscapes. The best view could be just around the next corner, and if you don't explore it, you might miss it forever. Every destination is at the end of the bonnet, waiting for you to discover it.
These experiences have enriched my life, transitioning from mere work trips to cherished memories. Each trip, whether for business or pleasure, has left its mark on my soul. I hope to continue exploring and creating more of these delightful memories.
