Verify ITR-V Online: E-Verification Process and Guidelines

After the submission of your Income Tax Return (ITR), you might have received the ITR-V form. This form necessitates further verification by the Income Tax department to make your return process compliant. Fortunately, you have the option to verify your ITR-V online. This not only saves time but also ensures a smoother process. Here, we will guide you through the e-verification process and also discuss traditional methods like sending it via post.

Steps to Verify ITR-V Online

Verification of your ITR-V online is a hassle-free and secure option provided by the Income Tax Department of India. Follow these simple steps to e-verify your return:

Log in to the e-Filing Portal: Visit the official Income Tax e-Filing website and log in with your credentials. Select e-Verify: Once logged in, navigate to the e-Verify your return option. Choose the Method: You can opt for different methods like using an OTP sent to your registered mobile number, net banking, or a digital signature. Follow the Prompts: Complete the verification process as per the screen instructions provided.

It's important to note that e-verification is generally faster and recommended. However, if you prefer, you can still choose to send the ITR-V by post to the Centralised Processing Centre (CPC) in Bengaluru. But for your convenience, we recommend opting for e-verification.

What If I Have Already Posted the ITR-V Receipt?

Even if you have already posted the ITR-V receipt, you should still proceed with e-verification. Due to varying communication systems and non-compliance cases, it is advisable to e-verify your ITR. This step can help in resolving any issues and ensuring compliance.

E-Verification Methods Offered by the IT Department

The Income Tax department offers two primary methods for electronic verification:

Aadhar Card Linking: Link your Aadhar card with your PAN number and generate an OTP sent to your registered mobile number. Enter the OTP to validate your e-filing. Electronic Verification Code (EVC): This code is delivered via registered mobile number or email ID. This code can be used to verify your ITR.

It's worth noting that the second method, EVC, has certain limitations. This method cannot be used by taxpayers seeking ITR or those with a total income exceeding Rs. 5 lakh.

Dispatching ITR-V to CPC Bangalore

ITR-V stands for 'Income Tax Return-Verification' form. This one-page document is needed when you file your income tax return without using a digital signature. It is sent to you via your registered email ID by the Income Tax Department.

Steps to Follow:

Dark Black Ink for Printing: Ensure the ITR-V form is printed using dark black ink for clarity. Sign Properly: Sign within the provided box so that the barcode and numbers are clearly visible. Do Not Fold or Staple: Ensure the barcode portion of the form is not folded or stapled. White A4 Envelope: Use a white A4 size envelope to send the form. Post to CPC Bangalore: Send the envelope to the CPC Bangalore via either speed post or ordinary post within 120 days of filing your return. Couriering is strictly not allowed. No Supporting Documents Required: Only the signed one-page ITR-V form needs to be submitted. Support documents are not required. Post Box Detail: Send the envelope to Income Tax Department CPC Post Box No. 1, Electronic City Post Office, Bangalore-560100, Karnataka. Email Acknowledgment: Upon receipt, CPC Bangalore will send an email acknowledging the receipt.

Remember, missing the 120-day deadline will result in your e-filed tax return being considered invalid. In such a case, you would need to file your tax return again.

Conclusion

To summarize, e-verifying your ITR-V is a highly recommended and convenient process. However, traditional methods are also available for those who prefer them. For swift and compliant tax filing, ensure you complete the verification process within the stipulated time.
