Why Do Americans Believe They Have More Freedom Compared to Other Western Countries?

What is it that Americans believe they have that sets them apart from other democratic 'Western' countries?

Perceived American Freedom

When it comes to freedom, Americans often believe they have unique rights that other democracies do not. For instance, they can freely use hate speech without fear of significant legal repercussions, in contrast to many European and other western nations where such speech is illegal. Additionally, Americans have the right to bear firearms in public, a right that is increasingly under scrutiny in other Western countries.

Corporate Personhood and Equal Rights

Americans also pride themselves on the legal recognition of corporations as persons, which has implications for free speech and corporate influence. At the same time, the struggle for the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) for the female population has been a long and ongoing battle.

Media and Indoctrination

From a young age, Americans are indoctrinated to believe in the greatness of their country. Children begin reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and gazing at the US flag with dreams of patriotism. History lessons are often biased, and Hollywood films attribute the noble deeds and achievements of other countries to the USA. However, the media in the USA often provides false or skewed information, leading to a lack of accurate historical knowledge among its citizens.

Constitution and Personal Liberty

The US Constitution is often cited as the basis for their freedom, limiting the power of the government and empowering the people. However, the reality is more complex. Unlike other Western democracies, privacy rights in the US are not as prominent as those in the EU. This ties back to a reaction against the secret police during the Nazi era and even before.

Fear of Socialism and Government Programs

There is also a fear in the USA of government programs that help citizens, which is often associated with socialism. This fear is not justified and is often driven by greed rather than practical concerns. The fear that government aid will lead to ruin is a common but unproven assertion.

Concluding Note

America is indeed a Constitutional Republic, a step away from being a direct democracy. With each passing year, many of the freedoms that Americans once enjoyed are being targeted by those in power. It is important to question these assertions and seek out a nuanced understanding of what freedom truly means in a modern democratic society.
