Will Real Change Follow the 2019 Hong Kong Democracy Protests?

As time passes since the 2019 Hong Kong democracy protests, the question remains: Will there be any meaningful changes in governance?

Democracy's Progress

Historically, significant progress in civil rights requires both legislative and attitudinal shifts. Much like the civil rights movement of the 1960s, where laws changed but attitudes largely remained resistant, the 2019 Hong Kong movement is also a milestone that may lead to substantial changes over time.

Terms like 'last straw' and 'tipping point' suggest a shift in the balance, indicating a potential era of transformation. However, the pathways to change are far from clear. I hope Joe Biden and his administration have plans to drive lasting reforms. It is crucial for there to be a significant and comprehensive transformation in governance.

The Power of Home Meetings

Some argue that real progress might be more achievable through localized, collective decision-making. For instance, discussing issues at a more personal, community level could inspire more accountability and positive change. Meetings held in the homes of elected officials or local authorities could be a productive forum. Instead of depending on distant central government reforms, fostering a sense of responsibility and immediate action within the community could yield better results.

Public discourse should take place in community settings to gauge and reflect the needs and concerns of the people. The challenge, however, lies in ensuring that these meetings are genuinely productive and contribute to meaningful action.

Limitations of Change

Despite the potential for impactful change, it's important to recognize that human nature and societal issues are complex and interconnected. Even with the best intentions, like those shown by Barack Obama's efforts to use his positive logical brain, significant societal transformation can be difficult to achieve. Divisions and human-made suffering persist, regardless of personal or collective efforts.

Maximizing the use of our inherent left brain—a logical, positive, and compassionate aspect—may be key to guiding humanity towards a more peaceful and cooperative future. This involves focusing on our shared goodness, oneness, and inner happiness, which do not require external validation or legal changes but can facilitate a shift in societal attitudes.

Consequences and Token Reforms

The aftermath of significant social movements often includes reprisals masked as 'security measures.' These can include giving emergency powers to leaders, implementing contact tracing apps to purportedly curb disease spread, and enacting superficial reforms in policing. Such measures may be presented as a form of progress, making individuals feel as though they have accomplished something. However, they are often distractions from meaningful systemic changes.

The key to lasting change lies in genuine and comprehensive reforms that address the root causes of social unrest. Token reforms may provide temporary relief but do little to fundamentally alter the underlying issues. For any change to be real and enduring, it must focus on addressing the systemic issues driving protests and fostering a more inclusive and supportive society.
