Is the LDS Approach to Mission Work the Correct One?

The debate around the qualifications necessary for mission work is an interesting one. Some may argue that only debaters and lawyers should be missionaries due to the ability to articulate complex points. However, this perspective undervalues the academic and intellectual depth found in faith and the unique role that young missionaries play in spreading the gospel.

Veni, Vidi, Vici: The Essential Role of Youth in Missionary Work

One of the most compelling arguments for the importance of young missionaries lies in the biblical examples provided, such as the experience of the apostles. In 1 Timothy 4:12, it is stated: 'Let no man despise thy youth but be thou an example of the believers in word in conversation in charity in spirit in faith in purity.' “Are people really to think young missionaries of no value when scripture has given them a stern challenge to witness and take example in their behaviours and allegiance?” This is the question that echoes through the halls of faith communities today.

Furthermore, in Acts 4:13, the knowledgeable and seemingly unschooled disciples are highlighted. Their brassless yet compelling message resonated with the crowd, presenting a unique testimony that transcends academic qualifications. Young missionaries often bring this raw, personal experience and passion to their work, which can be especially compelling to those they serve.

The Power of Direct Ministry

The early Christian prophets, starting with Acts 2:17-21; the significance of the Holy Spirit and the Book of Mormon, as in Alma 32:23; and the emphasizing on the role of unlearned believers are clear indications of divine agency in the spread of the gospel. The Lord commands: 'And it shall come to pass that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.' The immediacy and impact of such direct ministry cannot be underestimated.

The Call to All Believers

It is also important to note that Christ's commandment to preach the gospel to every creature was given to all believers, as seen in the Doctrine and Covenants (DC) 35:13: 'Wherefore I call upon the weak things of the world those who are unlearned and despised to thresh the nations by the power of my Spirit.' This verse starkly contrasts the idea that only those who have spent countless years in schools and seminaries are truly deserving or capable of such missions. Instead, the scripture emphasizes the value of those who are otherwise unschooled and perceived as less learned.

Embracing the Childlike Faith

The insight from Philippians 4:13: 'I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me,' speaks to the strength found in one's faith, not in academic or professional achievements. This principle is echoed in the Latter-Day Saint (LDS) belief that even young children can receive divine revelations. As Alma 32:23 states, 'And now he imparteth his word by angels unto men yea not only men but women also. Now this is not all little children do have words given unto them many times which confound the wise and the learned.'

This unique approach to gospel sharing can be a powerful tool, especially in a world that often relies on institutional knowledge and scholarly debate. Young missionaries bring a fresh, compelling message that can touch hearts in ways that more seasoned believers might not.

Additionally, the LDS church has a unique method of empowering its membership to share the gospel through personal experience and direct testimony. The concept of a 'spirit of prophecy' found in the scriptures is integral to this process, where members feel led to share the message of the gospel.

A Call to the Wider Church Community

While scholars and theologians are certainly valuable, especially in stepping up to those who are challenging and seeking deeper understanding, the wider church community should not overlook the power and importance of young missionaries in spreading the word. The call to ‘put on the armor of God’ (Ephesians 6:11) is a challenge that should not be limited to a select few. Each member, regardless of their academic or professional standing, can and should contribute to this vital mission.

Therefore, it is fitting to leave the intellectual debates to the scholars, and let the more emotional and personal aspect of faith be shared by those who are young and full of zeal, approaching the gospel with honesty and simplicity. These young missionaries are living examples of the truth, not merely expounders of doctrine, and their untainted sincerity and dedication can have a profound impact on those they serve.
