Working and Drinking in Osnabrück

After contributing to a minor task, a group of people from all over the world invited me to join them on a language course. Together, we embarked on a journey exploring northern Germany by bus. The diverse group of international friends made every moment joyful and unforgettable.

Internship in a Small Town North of Osnabrück

During an internship in a smaller town north of Osnabrück, breaking the ice was the hardest part, but once I was in, I felt like part of the family. This experience highlighted the hospitality and warmth of German people. One of the most memorable moments was attending a six-day wedding. This celebration was a testament to the close-knit German society where families, friends, and a significant amount of alcohol come together for unbridled joy and celebration.

Düsseldorf and the Rhine River

Despite the initial novelty, staying in an "Abssacker", which means staying the night and drinking in some of the oldest pubs, became a favorite activity. It was a mix of young people enjoying the nightlife and the laid-back atmosphere of the local culture.

Duisburg: Nightlife and Music

In Duisburg, the atmosphere was more lively, with people singing and dancing to NDW, a famous German pop band. The music and camaraderie in Duisburg showcased the unpretentious nature of the German cities. The love for community and the joy of shared experiences were evident in every area I experienced.

The Flux of Leipzig

Leipzig, with its bustling atmosphere, was a different kind of experience. Just a few years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, the city was in a state of flux. Anything could be turned into a pub or club, whether it was legal or not mattered little. This scene was reminiscent of the famous speakeasies of Chicago. The sense of adventure and freedom was palpable, and the lack of formalities made everything feel more genuine.

Halle: The Quiet Moments

When I got the chance to visit Halle, the memories of nights out drinking were replaced with serene walks on Rabeninsel, an island kept wild in the middle of the River Saale. The tranquility of the environment in Halle offered a different kind of joy, far away from the hustle and bustle of the city life. These quiet moments are just as valuable as any that I experienced elsewhere.

Merkel's Germany

A visit to Leipzig much later led to a memorable moment with a significant figure. A run across town involved 200 people crossing over to the inner ring, and a simple request to a cop for permission to do so led to the revelation that the Federal Chancellor, Angela Merkel, was nearby. The low-profile security and the lack of pomp impressed me in ways that a big ceremonial motorcade never could. Although I may not be a fan of Merkel, her presence and the way she was handled showed the practical approach to security in Germany.
